Perspectives with Maria Van Nguyen

Maria Van Nguyen captures the natural world through analogue photography. Originally, she worked in the fashion industry, but felt a disconnect and turned to photography to blend her creativity with her love of nature. Maria believes that even though it’s subtle, the quiet message behind her images is a reminder of who we are, where we come from, and how everything is interconnected.
In this PRC Stories feature, Maria shares her thoughts on mindful consumption and how her path has been shaped by letting go and flowing with the present.

Coming from a fast-paced career in the fashion industry, you shifted to a slower-paced lifestyle, documenting nature and building community. How did you shape this path?

As a teenager, I was determined to become a fashion designer. I achieved many of my goals in my 20s, only to realise that what I desired didn’t feel right. I learned more about the industry and felt a disconnect. At the same time, my personal values took shape, and I was naturally led to where I am now. Change is inevitable, and my path runs along water.

How did you realise that self-development and community are your priorities? Have you always felt this way?

I do believe that to take care of others, I have to take care of myself. I find joy in personal development and continuously challenge myself to seek new adventures and meet people from different backgrounds to broaden my perspective and deepen my compassion.

I feel strongly about preserving and protecting the earth and all living beings, believing that everything holds importance and value. I feel strongly about equality and using your privilege to raise your voice for those who can’t.

I don’t have specific moments where I thought this was a priority of mine, perhaps a build-up of various experiences of challenge, reflections on our modern disconnected ways of living, and maybe just a love for life on earth and hoping to make an impact.

What learnings have you taken with you from the fashion industry?

Seeing things from a wider perspective. Understanding the cost and impact it has ethically and environmentally. The earth's resources are limited, but we consume as if it’s infinite.

We need a shift in the industry, and we need to question how modern society depends on overconsumption. Change starts with one person, and we shouldn’t underestimate the power we hold.

The PRC Stories: Perspectives with Maria Van Nguyen

How has this transition shaped your consumption habits? When purchasing new clothes, what is most important to you?

I’m content with my wardrobe and comfortable in my consistent style, which is simple, classic and relaxed. If I acquire something now, I’m deliberate; they should be well-made, long-lasting garments in natural fibres, and investments for decades to come.

What 3 things have you been inspired by lately?

1. “The Living Mountain”, a book written by Nan Shepherd and her experiences of the Cairngorms in Scotland. An opener to beautiful observations most will pass without noticing. The book is a tribute to savouring the journey instead of rushing towards the summit.

2. I recently came back from a trip to Italy, where I volunteered at an organic vegetable farm. I left feeling immensely inspired, longing to go back the minute I left. Waking up in the peaceful countryside, working alongside open-minded, generous people, activating mind and body and working with our hands directly in touch with the earth. It was a dream.

3. At the farm, we could eat as many freshly harvested fruits and vegetables as we wanted. One thing I want to become better at is cooking, and there I was able to cook spontaneously and test new recipes for our shared meals. This has given me more confidence and joy in the kitchen.
